| 58 | Fort Opperman - Opperman's Kraal, Sandspruit, Volksrust "One of the first blockhouses was erected at Opperman's Kraal, thirteen miles north of Volksrust. It was built of stone, two stories high, and was altogether on a much more expensive scale than the subsequent ones, which were principally made of corrugated iron with stone ballast between. Barbed wire entanglements were stretched round and between the blockhouses. When the boers were hemmed between these barriers and a column, they were obliged either to break back through the column or attempt to cross our lines." - SOURCE: BOOK: WAR RECORD OF THE YORK & LANCASTER REGIMENT 1900-1902 FROM REGIMENTAL AND PRIVATE SOURCES. by Alexander Kearsey 1903. Containing sketch of Fort Opperman. GPS: 27°18'18.2"S 29°45'57.6"E Fort Opperman was visible from Dassieklip, the farm of Jan Daniel LEONARD. | ||

| 91 | Kenneth Van Den Berg JOUBERT Kenn Joubert was born in South Africa, with his first career as a banker. He eventually "banked" on three different continents. Kenn started writing seriously at the age of 16 with his first published short story. He left banking to work as a journalist, as a"District Correspondent" for the Natal Witness. Determined to see more of the world before settling down, Kenn quit his job and travelled to London to hitch-hike around Europe. At 23 he decided to add North America to his list of "spots visited"- with plans to return home to Africa in one year. However, he fell in love on the winter prairies of Western Canada with a pony-tailed girl whom he married, had a family; and is now a Canadian citizen of over 50 years! During this period, he has published commercial articles in national media in South Africa and Canada. Canada was kind to Kenn! In 1967 at age 34 - as a "High School Drop-Out" - he returned to upgrade his education at the University of Calgary and obtained a Degree in Education (History). He later returned to Graduate School to complete a Masters in Clinical Psychology. Kenn worked in a variety of positions as a "Community Psychologist" in Western Canada before settling on Vancouver Island BC. Although retired, he is still registered with the College of Psychologists in Alberta, Canada. Kenn is a well-known resource on Vancouver Island, Canada for "Trauma" support for groups involved in work-site disasters. He spends the rest of his time in an idyllic setting with his wife Fern, in a lovely cottage overlooking the Straits of Georgia on the inner coast of Vancouver Island. Kenn is a long-time member of the BC Federation of Writers in Canada and the SAWC (South African Writers Circle). He has participated in many writing courses and Writer's Conferences. He is a "Life Member" of the Huguenot Society of South Africa as well as a well-recognized Genealogist and historic researcher. Kenn is currently working on the next two books in this trilogy, which will be available through his publisher, Trafford Publishing in the near future. http://www.trafford.com | ||
