Portrait of Pieter Joubert (Winemaker, Montagu) by Peter Moór
This portrait of winemaker Pieter Joubert by Montagu artist Peter Moór stands on an easel in the town’s Museum. Moór came to Montagu, so the story goes, after Joubert told him that Montagu had the nicest wine and girls. We followed in the footsteps of Molly D’Arcy Thompson and visited this town of muscadel, fruit, artists, hot springs and well-preserved old buildings – page 22

Sketch of Fort Opperman on Opperman's Kraal, Sandspruit, Volksrust
Sketch of Fort Opperman on Opperman's Kraal, Sandspruit, Volksrust
"One of the first blockhouses was erected at Opperman's Kraal, thirteen miles north of Volksrust.
It was built of stone, two stories high, and was altogether on a much more expensive scale than the subsequent ones, which were principally made of corrugated iron with stone ballast between.
Barbed wire entanglements were stretched round and between the blockhouses. When the boers were hemmed between these barriers and a column, they were obliged either to break back through the column or attempt to cross our lines."

T.S. Ship 'China' - An engraving depicting the China can be see outside 20 Buiten Brouwersstraat in Amsterdam, Netherlands
T.S. Ship "China" - An engraving depicting the China can be see outside 20 Buiten Brouwersstraat in Amsterdam, Netherlands
The China was a VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, Dutch East India Company, [1]) ship of some 1124 tons, build in 1676 at the Amsterdam yard for the Amsterdam chamber.[1][2]The Ship was 160 foot long and 39 foot wide.
It is important to note that many sources give the name of the ship as Berg China, but the official Dutch records only give it as China. The confusion might stem from the fact that the China was captained by a Pieter van den Berg on some of her voyages.[3] Some other researches have noted this discrepancy as well. [4]
Between 1677 and 1691 the ship made four voyages past the Cape of Good Hope from the Netherlands to the Far East and back. It visited the Cape 8 times in total.[5]
Destined for the Cape, Paul Roux was one of 38 passengers, along with 156 seamen and 111 soldiers, aboard the 4th voyage. On 1688/03/20 the ship set sail from Goeree in the Netherlands, bound for Jakarta [2] (then known as Batavia) in Indonesia. They arrived in Table Bay on 1688/08/04[6] where 29 of the passengers as well as 14 seamen and soldiers left the ship. 20 of the seamen and passengers died on the way to the Cape.[6]
The China departed Table Bay on 1688/08/24 to continue it's voyage to Batavia. During it's last recorded voyage, returning from the Far East to the Netherlands, the ship suffered severe storm damage and had to wait in Mauritius for repair material to arrive from the Cape. It eventually arrived in the Cape on 1690/12/09 and stayed there until 1691/07/04 while further repairs were undertaken.
An engraving depicting the China can be see outside 20 Buiten Brouwersstraat in Amsterdam, Netherlands
