Van Vlissingen; dienaar van die VOC, word ongeveer 1666 na Mauritius gestuur as kuiper. Word daar vryburger na 1672; gaan soek beter bestaan aan die Kaap 1676 maar keer in 1677 na Mauritius terug op dieselfde skip as Pieternella van Meerhoff. Kry in 1683 kontrak van opperhoof Lamotius van Mauritius om arak te vervaardig. In 1696 verleen opperhoof Diodati die reg aan hom om patats en boontjies aan die garnisoen te lewer; hierdie kontrak hernu in 1699. Aankoms 1709.01.26 met vrou en kinders aan Kaap omdat die VOC afstand van Mauritius gedoen het en die ingesetenes onttrek het teen 1708. Koop twee erwe en 'n huis in Kaapstad; boer op plaas Patrijse Valley, Stellenbosch, wat hy van Rudolf Fredrik Steenbok gekoop het, maar sake het swak verloop en teen 1712/13 het hy die plaas teruggegee. In sy boedel het hy slegs die huis en erwe in Kaapstad oor.

I have just finished reading both Krotoa-Eva, the woman from Robben Island > by Elsie Bloem (ISBN 0-7957-0088-1) and Pieternella van die Kaap by Dalene > Matthee (ISBN 0 624 03784 3. I was quite intrigued to find that Pieternella, (daughter of Eva-Krotoa and Pieter van Meerhoff) married a Daniel Zaaiman and they had several children all whom were born on Mauritius.
Volgens Pama II was hy van Vlissingen afkomstig. Hy het ‘n kontrak gehad met die Kommandeur van Mauritius om daar patattas te plant. Daniel Zaayman het daar getrou met Petronella van Meerhof (dogter van Eva). Petronella van Meerhof en haar suster was in 1677 op die skip "Bode" na Mauritius gestuur. Na sy troue met haar bly hulle 'n paar jaar op Mauritius gelukkig saam.
In November 1707 word al die vryburghers op Mauritius die keuse gegee deur die bewindheeser of hulle na die Kaap toe wil gaan of na Batavia. Daniel Zaayman en Petronella met hulle ses ongetroude kinders en 10 slawe, asook twee skoonseuns (Herbert Janse van Schoonhoven die ander Johannes Bockelberg) met hulle vroue (Eva and Petronella) verhuis Kaap toe waar hulle op 26 Januarie 1709 arriveer.

Notes: Prior to coming to the Cape around 1708, he had lived with his family on the island of Mauritius, then a Dutch East India Company Settlement, where they had grown sweet potatotes on the Lemoenboomvlakte. In 1696 he had two slaves to help him and they were expected to plant out 1000 half-aums of sweet potatoes each year and then dig up the crop. The Comander at Mauritius suggests that for this they really need about 30 or 40 slaves. Upon the abandonment of the settlement on Mauritius, he was one of the freemen who elected to go to the Cape (rather than to Batavia) (Source: Leibbrandt - Letters Received 1695-1708, pages 92, 168 & 453)
At the time of his death he owned a house and yard in the Table Valley, block gg, numbers 11 and 12. This house was sold from his estate to Jan Jacob Stockvliet in March of the following year. His household goods seem to have been minimal, a bed, mattress and pillows plus some table and kitchen ware. Apart from these, a large stock of silver buttons (58) and trouser fittings perhaps indicates that he dealt in these? There is also a chest with coopering tools, perhaps another trade he or one of his five slaves, practised. His children are listed in the order given in the documents below. Daniel Zaaijman circa 1698-1725 sailor in the emply of the Dutch East India Co. born circa 1698, Mauritius died 15 July 1725, in the far east, probably Ceylon Notes: On 29th November 1718 he applied to the Council of Policy to enter the service of the Dutch East India Company to try his fortune in India, saying that he was at present a ward of the Orphan Chamber and very poor. Daniel was the progenitor (stamvader) of the Saayman family in South Africa. He was employed by the VOC. After he arrived in the Cape he requested permission to be sent to Mauritius (then a Dutch East India Company Settlement) around 1664-66, as he thought he would be able to make a better living there. He could possibly have been one of the men who left for Mauritius on the ship "Nieuweland" in 1664. Here he had a contract with the commander of Mauritius to plant sweet potatoes on the Lemoenboomvlakte on the island.
He returned to the Cape 1676, but in 1677 he sailed to Mauritius again on the ship "Bode", on which Pieternella van Meerhof and her sister were also passengers.
In 1683 he had a contract with Commander Lamotius of Mauritius to produce arak. In 1696 Commander Diodati granted him the rights to deliver sweet potatoes and beans to the garrison (this contract was renewed in 1699). In 1696 he had two slaves to help him and they were expected to plant out 1000 half-aums of sweet potatoes each year and then dig up the crop. The Comander at Mauritius suggested that for this they really need about 30 or 40 slaves.
In Nov 1707 all the vryburghers on Mauritius were given the choice whether they wanted to go to the Cape or to Batavia. By 1708 the VOC abandoned Mauritius and withrew its people from the island. The last of the Dutch-Mauritian dynasty left the island in December 1708 on the ships "Mercurius" and "Carthago".
Daniel and Pieternella decided to leave for the Cape with their 6 unmarried children, their 2 sons-in-law (Herbert Janse van Schoonhoven and Johannes Bockelberg) and their 10 slaves. They arrived back in the Cape on 26 Jan 1709.
Daniel bought two plots of land and a house in Cape Town.
He also bought the farm “Patrijse Valley” in Stellenbosch, from Rudolf Frederik Steenbok, but things did not go well and by 1712/13 he returned the farm.
