Jean was the progenitor (stamvader) of the Du Rand family in South Africa. He was a French Huguenot from La Motte-Chalancon, Dauphiné. He arrived in the Cape on 27 Jan 1689 on board the ship "Wapen van Alkmaar".
He practised as a surgeon and farmer in Drakenstein. He was a member of the heemraad. He settled on the farm "Bergen Henegouwen" in Simondium.
